East Coast vidal blanc can be hard to pin down and describe in a general sense. Sometimes, it’s quite tropical and unctuous. Some winemakers barrel age it and almost treat it like they do chardonnay. Sometimes it’s kinda, sorta riesling-esque, but never really. I’ve had some terrific dessert-style vidal over the years, too.
Then there are the fresher, more citrus-driven styles like this Chaddsdford Winery 2022 Vidal Blanc ($22*), which — if tasted blind — I would have thought was sauvignon blanc.
Bright and fresh, the nose is all about citrus — grapefruit, lemon, and little lime — with a grassy, herbal edge. As it warms, some green melon and white peach aromas peek out too.
Medium-bodied, the palate is a bit more savory and herbal, with a distinct tarragon note joining the citrusy, grassy qualities. There is some fruity sweetness here that is well-balanced by brisk acidity. Again, as it warms, the fruit flavors get a bit more complex with some just-cut, ripe green melon.
