A small-run rosé that is decidedly not "Provencal"

If, even in the heat of the mid-summer, you want a little more flavor and a little more texture in your rosé, Macari Vineyards has just what you’re looking for in its Macari Vineyards 2023 Meadowlark Pinot Noir Rosé ($34*), part of the unique — and distinct — portfolio at the winery’s Cutchogue, NY wine bar and event space, Meadowlark North Fork.
Made from estate-grown pinot noir that was fermented for two days on the skin and aged on the lees for enhanced depth and mouthfeel, this is a distinct diversion from the pale pink wines that dominate the market.
This wine isn’t necessarily better or worse than those brisker styles. It’s just different.
Much darker pink than most East Coast rosés, it smells primarily like fresh and macerated North Fork strawberries with layers of watermelon, orange peel, and lightly caramelized nuts.
Medium-lighter bodied with a silky, almost creamy, mouthfeel; it’s still fresh and balanced by juicy acidity. The flavors are similar — strawberries, watermelon, blood orange, and a little peach — with a delicate earthiness in the background that reminds you that this is pinot noir. The finish is long and flavorful.
This is the kind of rosé that I love on Thanksgiving.
