It may have sold out last week, but this wine makes the case for more chenin in the Finger Lakes

Winemaker Nova Cadamatre, who co-owns Trestle Thirty One with her husband Brian, excels at building texture in her wines — and this Trestle Thirty One "Study Sketch Series" 2022 Chenin Blanc ($34*) is a perfect example.
Made using chenin blanc grown in the Gibson Vineyard in Dresden, on the west side of Seneca Lake, this wine was fermented medium-toast French oak (with 4% stain steel fermented riesling blended in).
That barrel fermentation is apparent on the nose, with sweet, oak-born spice sprinkled over top of floral, sweet citrus, pineapple, and lemon oil aromas. The medium-to-fuller-bodied palate is at once broad and mouth-filling but also fresh and almost crunchy in feel. Juicy acidity runs up the spine of the wine, with layers of citrus and tropical fruits on either side. The oak footprint is well-integrated, bringing subtle spice and nuttiness. Bright and well-balanced, the finish is long and juicy.
You know I don’t always love aromatic white varieties spending significant time in oak barrels, but it works here—and works well.
This wine sold out late last week, but watch for future releases.
