I’ve already told you that most of the white wines I tasted on my recent trip to Loudon County, Virginia were either flabby, over-oaked, or both.
But not all of them. Especially not the wines I tasted with Sarah Walsh at Walsh Family Wines. My favorite among them, and the one I bought a bottle of to bring back to New York, was this Walsh Family Winery 2021 Paeonia ($47).
The blend of 40% viognier, 35% chenin blanc, 20% albariño, and 5% petit manseng is aromatic and complex. It starts with peach-apricot stone fruit aromas, but there are layers of tropical fruit, beeswax, citrus peel, white flowers, and a subtle oak footprint in the form of a delicate butterscotch note.
Rich but balanced, the palate shows nice flavor intensity with a lightly oily feel, but good acidity and freshness at the edges. The flavors are citrusy and tropical with peachy nuance. A long, fresh finish is distinctly floral with subtle nutty oak.
