Anyone who has spent any time with Hudson Valley wines is already familiar with the delicious work Millbrook Estate does with the tocai grape. The winery’s “Special Reserve” bottling is made entirely in stainless steel, resulting in a wine that is always fresh and fruity and extremely popular.
This was my first time tasting their single-vineyard Lollipop Hill Vineyard tocai, which was fermented and aged for six months in neutral oak. I think I like this one even more.
The nose on the Millbrook Estate 2023 “Lollipop Hill” Tocai Friulano ($30*) is pretty with floral notes sprinkled over juicy peach, lime, and grapefruit aromas. Medium-light in body, the palate features a subtle leesy edge that brings some complexity to well-concentrated pear, peach, and lime flavors. It is juicy and fresh with citrusy acidity and has a long, dry finish that turns floral and lime zesty.
Tasted over the course of three days, some sweet melon fruitiness emerged on the palate and the floral qualities faded just a bit.
