They may not be as refined or classically flavored as methode champenoise sparkling wines, but I’ve been charmed by several carbonated wines I’ve tasted over the past few years. Many of them are made with non-classic sparkling grapes (meaning things other than chardonnay, pinot meunier, and pinot noir), and they tend to be more affordable than the classic sparkling wines I love most.
Suhru Wines NV Sparkling Golden Muscat ($26), released earlier this year, is one such charmer of a wine.
Made from North Fork-grown golden muscat, the aromas are fruity, with a melange of melon and citrus aromas and subtle (at least for a muscat) floral notes.
Medium-to-light in body, the palate isn’t overly complex. It has that same fruity-floral combination that leans heavily into green melon, with orange and lime citrus behind that and a distinct lemongrass note even further in the background.
Juicy, fresh, and easy to drink (and love), the acidity is crisp, and the Prosecco-adjacent carbonation just adds to the overall refreshment this wine offers.
