I may be a card-carrying member of the cabernet franc fanatics club, but I don’t think this is my bias showing. There is a lot of great cabernet franc available from East Coast producers right now.
In fact, I tasted so many impressively delicious examples this month that the four “Wine of the Week” posts that I wrote just weren’t enough to highlight all of the deserving wines. So, here are 13 More Great East Coast Cabernet Francs that I can recommend and suggest you seek out.
And, in case you missed the four “Wine of the Week” picks, they were: Living Roots Wine & Co. 2022 Cabernet Franc, Paumanok Vineyards 2022 Grand Vintage Cabernet Franc, Ravines Wine Cellars 2022 Cabernet Franc, and Usonia Wines 2022 New Suns Cabernet Franc.
As you can see from that list and many of the wines listed below, 2022 was a banner year on the East Coast for cabernet franc.
Bedell Cellars 2023 Cabernet Franc
Red fruit aromas—mostly strawberry and spiced red cherry—are backed by floral notes and delicate hints of fresh herbs. Medium-lighter bodied, the palate brings more strawberry and red cherry with hints of spice and flowers. Lower-tannin style with nice freshness to its overall velvety feel. 90pts | $40* | Available here
Brooklyn Oenology 2019 Cabernet Franc
The nose starts with cherry pie filling and strawberry preserves before moving into fresh blackberries, dark chocolate, wet earth, and subtle toasty oak. Medium-bodied, the palate shows ripe red fruits with a hint of cabernet franc savoriness. The tannins bring some grip, but are softening at the edges. Chocolate and tobacco flavors come at the end of a long, balanced finish. 90pts | $32* | Available here
